Valentine’s Day.

Or as it’s traditionally known St. Valentine’s Day, named for the 3rd century Roman saint who, since the Middle Ages is associated with courtly love. One legend has it that in medieval times it was believed birds paired in mid-February. This was then associated with the romance of Valentine.

We’ll never know precisely the historical origin of this modern lovers’ holiday with it’s aphrodisiacal gifts of rich, sweet chocolate; heady flower bouquets; lush, red wine. And what would the evening be without words of love:

A book of verses beneath the bough,

a jug of wine, a loaf of bread and thou beside me.

Sounds like the perfect lover’s gift basket to me.
